Robert Brandt, an identical twin, died from accidental electrocution on July 5, 1949 at the age of 20. Twinless Twins Support Group, International (TTSGI) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1986 by Dr. Raymond W. Brandt. Dr. Brandt struggled for years with the pain of separation from Robert, and a question haunted him, "Was he still a twin?" Through inner discovery and much soul searching he finally came to the realization: "Once a twin, always a twin."
Why Twin Loss is Different
• Twins new to their loss struggle with their identity, wondering 'Am I still a twin?'
• The surviving twin may have feelings of guilt that he or she lives while the twin has gone.
• The Twinless Twin may develop an aimless attitude, or feelings of loneliness. He or she doesn’t know how to continue living without his or her twin.
• Regrettably, Twinless Twins are at a higher risk for reckless and/or suicidal behavior.
• The new “normal” existence doesn’t reinforce the twinship or offer many qualified support resources.
It's not easy what newly Twinless have to do. The entire world has turned upside down and inside out. Nothing makes sense. Well, here they are twins. They can tell their stories and cry and scream and laugh and cry some more. No one else will be able to relate to them and their new reality like our warm, caring family. Twinless understand that even after their loss, the relationship does not end. Only another twin can truly relate – it is as unique as twin birth.
As Dr. Brandt began reaching out to other Twinless Twins, he recognized his own healing. Thus he coined the phrase "Healing by Helping others," which has become our motto. We’ve seen his dream come true as the arms of TTSGI stretch to embrace Twinless Twins around the globe.
